Humulus is a twining, rough perennial herb with simple, opposite leaves. It is found growing wild in open or wooded, moist areas, along roadsides, streams and river banks. The plant is cultivated for the resinous material in the flowers which is used to make beer.

Grains are suboblate to oblate; the amb rounded triangular to circular and 3-4 porate. The pores are circular to oval. The intine is thickened below the pores, forming an onci. Grains of Humulus and Cannabis are very similar and resemble pollen of the Moraceae family.
Grains are 14-23 x 20-28 micrometers in size.
